German Titan Poker online qualifier Alexander Debus finished the 2011 World Series of Poker Main Event in 137th position after 6 days of play. His prize was $54,851.

In his last hand of the tournament, Alexander moved all-in with 8♣8♠ and was faced against the K♦K♣ of John Hewitt.

The flop came: Q-8-2 giving Debus a huge advantage with his set.

Unfortunately, the river delivered the only king remaining in the deck, as one of the players of the table had folded a king pre-flop.

Federated Sports + Gaming (FS+G) has launched its weekly Global Poker Index ranking system, which will “rank and track the weekly performance of the world’s top 300 live tournament poker players.”

“This system is revolutionary for poker and will provide a clear-cut, statistically definitive means for comparing the live tournament accomplishments of top players,” said Annie Duke, commissioner of the Epic Poker League.

In this week’s ranking, Team Titan’s Sam Trickett is listed in 24th place in the world while his teammate Marvin Rettenmaier is ranked in 86th place

According to information published on the Global Poker Index website, the top tournament players “are ranked weekly based on their performance by finishing in cash positions in qualifying tournaments occurring over the previous 36 month period.”

A poker player’s “composite score is derived by a combination of finishing-place, buy-in and aging factors for each tournament in which the player records a result.”

In this week’s rankings, Jason Mercier tops the charts with a composite score of 2459.89, just 13 points ahead of Bertrand Grospellier. Eugene Katchalov is ranked in 3rd place, followed by Samuel Stein, and Fabrice Soulier.

According to Annie Duke, “Many of the world’s best players are not well known outside of the avid fan base. 1,864  players came back to the Rio Casino at noon today to play Day 3 of the 2011 WSOP Main Event. Among the players were five representatives of Titan Poker: Marvin Rettenmaier, Christophe Benzimra, Sam Trickett, Alexander Debus, and Andras Balogh. Three of them advanced to Day 4.

 Unfortunately Sam Trickett and Andras Balogh were eliminated before the dinner break.

Sam Trickett from Team Titan was the first to leave after a bad beat. The English pro pushed all-in on the turn with K♥ 9♥ on a board K-Q-9-4 and was facing K♠

The river was cruel for Trickett when it delivered a queen. That one was really hard and Sam Trickett was eliminated from the Main Event of the 2011 WSOP. A few minutes later, it was the turn of Andras Balogh who was shortstacked to bust out. He survived with his 40K for three hours. Then he had to push all-in with A9 offsuit in late position and was paid by a player in the blind with AK. The best hand pre-flop held on and the Hungarian was eliminated after a really satisfying tournament.

News on Monday that the Nevada Legislature passed a bill that could make Internet gambling legal in the state sent Internet gaming stocks shooting upward. Shares in companies that develop Internet software and web sites that facilitate online gambling began to climb steadily over the past month in anticipation of the bill’s passage.

Shares in CryptoLogic Inc., a Toronto-based company that develops Internet gaming software, are up more than 23% over the past two sessions. Shares in Chartwell Technology Inc., a Calgary-based company with an agreement to develop an online gaming web site for casino giant Harrah’s Entertainment Inc., have more than doubled since April.

David Bajwa, head of investor relations at Chartwell, says the Nevada legislation “is a huge breakthrough” for the Internet gaming industry. “It legitimizes the industry and opens up a whole new world of revenue sharing for companies that build software to run the sites.”

Nevada Senate Approves Internet Gambling

Baccarat has a reputation as a “gentleman’s” game and one for the high rollers. With dealers dressed in full tuxedos and tables often roped off or physically

separated from other gaming tables, the impression most people have is of a game somehow reserved for a more sophisticated crowd. In actuality both high rollers and more reserved gamblers can play. In fact, this is a game that should attract the masses. In baccarat the casinos have a low advantage over players—approximately 1.17 percent to 1.36 percent.

Invented in Italy and popularized in France, baccarat continues to be played in Europe as chemin de fer or chemmy, better known by the American slang term “shimmy.” Americans first tried chemin de fer in the early part of this century and decided it was too tedious and confusing. Sometime in the late 1950s or early 1960s, the game became known as baccarat, from the French alteration of the Italian term baccara, meaning zero. Once the game was introduced to Las Vegas casinos, the rules were altered so that only the casino could bank the game instead of one player against all others as in baccarat’s original form. Although chemin de fer, double table baccarat, and mini baccarat are played at many casinos, the following rules refer to the game’s most prevalent form: American baccarat.

The typical baccarat table is shaped like an elongated oval, numbered one through fifteen, with seven positions at either end of the oval (the number thirteen is always left out). The game is played with either six or eight decks of cards with a rather simple object: get as close to a total of nine as possible. Ace through nine cards are given their respective point values while face cards and tens count as zero. There are only two hands played by the entire table: the “Banker’s” and the “Player’s.” A hand in play cannot total more than nine. When a hand does go over, ten is subtracted from the total. Although the scoring of the game is complicated, the rules are clearly written and placed at every table.

The game begins with an elaborate, ritualized shuffling of the cards. Personnel working this game include two dealers seated together at the center of the table, a caller standing at the table across from the dealers, and a ladderman, supervising the action from a chair above the table. The two dealers and the caller take turns mixing the cards, after which the deck is given to a player to cut. Next, one of the dealers will flip the top card to reveal the value of the card, which dictates the number of cards to be “burned” (removed from play).

Once these preliminaries are over, players bet either on the Banker’s hand, the Player’s hand, or on the possibility of a tie. The shoe (wooden or plastic rack holding up to eight decks of cards) passes to the player in the seat numbered “one” after the caller says, “no more bets.” The player holding the shoe and dealing is termed the “Banker” and can only bet on the Banker’s hand. (The shoe will move counterclockwise as soon as there is a winning Player’s hand.) After receiving a nod from the caller, the Player deals a card face down from the shoe, which is the first in the Player’s hand. This card is given to the caller, who either gives it to the bettor with the most money on the table or keeps it if there is not a highest bet. The caller “calls out” the rulings on the hands as the players sit and wait. After one more card for either hand, if necessary, the game is over and the highest-scoring hand wins. Those who bet on winning Banker hands, however, owe a 5 percent commission to the casino. The seated dealers pay off the winning bets and keep track of the commissions by placing markers in trays in front of them for each respective seat number (each seated dealer handles one side of the oval). Players must pay commissions owed before they leave the table.
